on travel by train.
a quick hello
plus, a few words on travel by train.
i'm thinking about vacation again today.
of dinner served on clean white plates.
of napkins arranged just so.
of watching the lights
of cities unknown pass me by.
i'm thinking of reading beautifully bound books
while eating small sugared sweets.
while the rhythm of train journey
takes me along.
i'm not thinking of the subway
nor the local train.
i'm thinking of a train
destine toward someplace new,
somewhere unknown to me
but, perhaps known to you.
somewhere the food is different
from my usual things.
where the dress is intriguing
where the markets are exciting.
where it's difficult to order meals because
i can't speak the language.
i'm thinking of deep navy panels
and dark rusty red benches.
of worn wooden chairs
and of thickly upholstered furniture.
of antique looking carpets
and of over-sized drapes.
i'm thinking of laying my head
on one of those flat pillows
you're afforded when traveling by night
via train.
i'm thinking
in the morning
i'd like to stand outside on the grates between cars.
the swirl of steam from my morning cup
fogging my glasses just a little.
i'd like to watch the gray of the
gravel below whiz by me.
i'd like to peer at the conductor
in his patent looking hat
his patient eyes set on the track out in front of us.
i'd like to clasp my hands together with excitement.
i'd like to feel that childlike feeling one gets from travel.
from being out there in the world.
from being on the way, to somewhere new.
i'd like to take in the air
of a place i've never been.
sounds like a nice thing to do
a nice place to be,
a nice moment or two.
doesn't it.

what a lovely, lovely text.
i travelled from venice to the south of france by night train this summer. and often travel by train to see my boyfriend in another city.
trains are quite something.
I want to be somewhere where it is hard for me to order food as well!
That time lapse made my heart pitter patter!
beautiful photo and beautiful words . . . thank you!
smile, my pleasure. apologies for the typos, i wrote this earlier today and suppose i didn't reread it very well. ;)
this makes me think of glamorous women and traveling on the orient express in a time where men were so very dashing. of clark gable putting up a sheet for my modesty and gary cooper putting my bag on the top rack.
hose with seams up the back and icy cold sapphire gin martinis, with only one olive. flowers in the hair or pinned to our clutch - mysterious love letters from secret admirers.
can i go too?
*sigh* I would love to be on that train...eating sweets and reading from a beautiful bound book...
i don't even have to imagine, because you did such a good job giving words to this perfect little day dream.
i loved this post.
i've been wanting to travel and go back to paris, and i masochistically check rates on air canada often and just imagine how it would be like after i've really purchased the ticket.
sigh.
oof. sounds amazing.
Now I wannu travel too. But there are none nearby, we don't have them this far north in the world. I can go further south, though!
char: that's basically what i was thinking, oh the orient express. i've been dreaming of taking the train from london to beijing in 2010, doesn't that just sound amazing. in fact i looked into prices today, eeek. and you bet you can come along too!
tiffany: funny, i was just thinking of you yesterday. how's paris? am planning a trip that way, are you there through the summer?
eastsidebride: doesn't it. i can't stop thinking of train travel these days.
arctic mom: hi!
yes.
i'd like to go, too ...
what a romantic and enchanting way with words you have in pulling us in, wishing we could come along for this ride ...
oh, pretty please ...

ps thanks for your comment re: my banner ~ when i saw those leaves floating about in our rain barrel with the sky and trees reflecting, i knew it was an image to capture ... xo

Aah...train travel is so romantic. I hope you were accompanied by beautiful luggage, a stylish hat and a handsome traveling companion. I truly hope that times like these are not just images from long-ago movies. Thanks for bringing it to life. x xCaroline

my favorite line from your poem -
"i'd like to feel that childlike feeling one gets from travel."
yesyesyes. i know exactly what you mean. i was always so excited to travel when i was little... it was one of the most special feelings. also you know that feeling you'd get as a kid when you'd stay in a big fancy hotel? yeahhhh

There are few things as satisfying as travelling by train.
