4.18.2009

i thought it well said.

a saturday story: the pigeon.

i've had a bit of a blogging block this week and am a little busy with everything else.
i'll be back full force late next week sometime. until then though, how about a saturday story.

a pigeon story.

to read others like it:
the mouse story. the street story. the apple story.

i kind of have a new found thing for pigeons. i don't know, i think they sort of get a bad rap.
have you ever really taken a second to look at them. their pretty little eyes, blinking so intently.
their minds it seems, move a mile a minute.
scavengers yes, but beautiful in their way.

a few weeks ago now, i saw a little something that made me walk away with a smile.
it had me appreciate the small interactions between humans and animals.
the little ways we all try to do our part.
and it made me like these small winged creatures just a bit more.

so here it is:

it was a tuesday. i woke like any other morning. slightly dreading pulling myself from bed.
certainly dreading sitting down to work.
just the same i did most all of my regular morning things. peered out the window, searched for the sun.
made espresso, simmered steel cut oats, checked my email.
essentially just a normal morning.

when i finally popped out my front door. the wind gusted, the neighbour as he often does, played his flute.
it felt rather like fall, instead of spring. the branches swaying, the dry leaves skimming past.
the cold air making its way under my coat somehow.
but the sun shining, and the snow, finally gone.

i walked down my street, across the busy intersection near by.
and into the park i cut through each day.

there's a statue of a horse in the centre,
there are large wire garbage cans
and green picnic benches.
there are towering maples and oaks.
there are paths.
and there is calm in the middle of the busy city.

when i walk through i often look at the legislature
and watch the shadows it casts on the park grounds.
and i wonder what might be going on in there.
what might be in process.
what could be being said.

i wonder if the horse guards are out front that day.
even, i think sometimes of what they may be thinking.
the police officers on their horses there.
are they thinking of the beauty of the sunny morning.
or of how lucky they are to spend their work day on horseback.
or even how fortunate they are to be in the presence of such majestic animals on any given day.

that day i was walking through,
carefully stepping along the cement path.
the brown and yellow leaves fluttering past my feet.

that's when i saw it, something slightly out of the ordinary.
there was a van there, parked on the soggy brown grass.
stopped. motionless.

and there was a women, she was stepping from the driver's side door.
her keys dangling from her side, her hands covered in thick, brown, suede looking gloves.
bulky against her thin feminine wrists.

she walked to the back doors, and opened them.
they swung sort of wide and made that faint creaking noise that doors sometimes do.
i watched. intent to see what she was doing.

she bent down and unclasped something.
the fastening of a small cage.
she bent down further still, gingerly lifting something out.
it was small bird, a pigeon.
his greenish grey coat shimmering.
his orangy eyes blinking.

he was pretty and he was scared.
she was delicate with him, careful.

i watched as she slowly turned.
as she gently carried him into the park.
there were no words,
she didn't speak to him,
and not to me.
she didn't see me.
but, i could sort of feel her trying to calm him.

a meter down the path she bent down.
bending her knees just so.
resting one,
on the wet ground.

when her hands reached the grass, she opened them.
and she let that little pigeon walk away.

he seemed scared to do so.
unsure if he should really leave her.
she shooed him on a bit, seeming to tell him he'd be fine.

then she stood, turned and walked back to the open doors.
a touch of mud staining her right knee.
the maple leaves cracking as she walked.
the cars in the distance feverishly rushing to work.

the pigeon with his little white spotted back.
walking away, he didn't fly, but strode in a curious kind of way.
she closed the back doors.
and got set to leave.

i wanted to ask her.
why she had a pigeon, why she had let it go.
how she came across him.

i walked toward her.
she put her foot to the side of the van.
and i decided to ask what i had wondered.

you know, she told me.
her colleague had brought that little guy in.
because he couldn't fly.
because he had a bum wing and he seemed unwell.
her co-worked had been worried for him.

but she had decided this park, this one in particular was just fine for him.
he hadn't any natural predators in the city to speak of.
he'd find lots to eat here.
and he'd be happy she thought.

i told her i thought it was nice that both she and her colleague
had taken the time to think about the welfare of small insignificant pigeon.

i thought you might think so too.
so there it is,
the pigeon story.

happy saturday.
speak soon friends.
xox.

but wanted to say hello, and show you
a little easter cake

i made this morning.
wish you could have popped by for a slice.

it turned out pretty nice,
so maybe you can come next time.
i will admit though,
i was just fooling with the icing,
and it does need a little work.
:)

oh and one other thing,
my dad sent three new little scoops.
perfect for just about anything,
but i'm thinking pretty great for coffee & tea.

anyway, that's all for now.
how was the weekend? get up to anything fun?

hello again spring.

/>

hello again spring.
i thought we lost you this week,
what with the snow and freezing temperatures and all.
thanks for coming back so soon.
phew.

as for me
i'm going to run out to the post office
but, wanted to tell you a little something about my morning first.
because i think it's nice,
and because i think you might think so too.

at this moment, the cool breeze is lightly blowing through my window
which, coincidentally is pushed as far open as it will go.
the cool air meeting the warmth of inside,
something like silk ribbons floating in the afternoon breeze
on a windy day in may.

i'm snacking on a light green apple.
a golden delicious i think.

this apple, it's actually why i'm writing.
i wanted to say that something simple
happened to me this morning.
nothing major, but nice just the same.
so i thought i'd tell you.

an hour or so ago
a dear friend popped by my place,
and she brought with her,
four shiny apples.
just wanted to drop them off to me.
[i had told her i had forgotten to get apples on my way home last night]

i know it's silly to write about, but really,
how nice is it,
that she rang my bell
and said, hi it's me, can i come up?
then after a short ride
in the wonderful old fashioned gated elevator
of my building
she arrived at my door
and said, i brought you apples,
but i really can't stay long.

my hair was still messy from morning,
and i stood there at the door, still in my pajamas.

this of course didn't matter,
because these are the little things friends do.
sigh, am so grateful for these sorts of moments.

that's all for now.

have a great day.
and happy early holiday weekend,
whatever you might celebrate.
heart.
xox.
