i've been thinking of
warmer seasons this morning



of watermelon by the sea
of buckets of clams at the beach
of light dew on green grass.






of late night sunsets
of summer salads outside
of fires on the sand
of champagne in the evening.




of picking your way across
the pebbles of a rushing river
arms stretched wide,
sunglasses slipping down your nose.



of ice cream from a roadside stand
of tire swings at the lake,
of the crack of a bat at the ball park.

of cotton candy at the fair,
of syrupy snow-cones.




of french fries from paper boxes,
of plastic bibs meant for lobster,
of ketchup bottles bulging in the sun,
of trips in cars,
of stray balloons,
of mix tapes
of smoke in your eyes
and marshmallows on the fire.

of simple summer days,
the kind you think of
when winter is really settling in.

feels like ages.

it's not been that long, i know.
but, it still kind of feels that way.



i walked for coffee this morning.
i woke a little more tired
than i would have liked.

it had rained through the night,
and it sprinkled still
when my feet first met
the pavement.

i, with my black plaid umbrella
my dark wool coat
my old gray boots
my favorite leather bag
and my trusty oatmeal scarf.


the outside,
a distinct cold.
the air,
a certain kind of chill.
the kind that comes only
once we've been through
both summer and fall.

one that comes
just before
the next season
is to grace us,
with all kinds
of winter white.





it got me to thinking of
warmer weather
of warmer places,
of long spans of beach
of sandpipers skittering past
of cream linen pants
and of perfectly manicured toes.

of old leather sandals
of suntanned feet
and of shorts with stripes.




of drinks in cold glasses
with mint enough for two
and of
bowls of pretzels by the pool.




of white fluffy towels,
of candles at sunset
and photos on film.



of shells by the water
of last year's bikini
and of my perfect straw hat.


of the sun setting just so.
of dinner served at a table on the sand.
the chairs, wooden.
the linens, white



the wind ruffling them ever so often.
the waiter, with an accent
the kind
that makes you
swoon when he reads the specials.




that's what i feel like today.
and really
that's about how i feel every year,
when i know winter is just hiding around the bend.
