on days at the lake and sunsets past nine.
well hello!
how are things on this fine feathered day?
`````
you know, lately i've been thinking,
if you told me summer was to last forever
i'd almost believe you,
i'd almost wish it so.
i'd almost believe you,
i'd almost wish it so.
if you told me the days wouldn't end
where i could wear my bathing suit 'til dusk,
and watch the sunset past nine.
if you told me that farmer's markets would stay open
and figs would stay ripe.
if you told me we could leave off the heat
and get prepared for more summer,
i'd smile a little but i think i'd miss autumn.
and get prepared for more summer,
i'd smile a little but i think i'd miss autumn.
i like its feeling of bounty
its brown sugar loaves.
i like its golden turkeys and cast iron pans.
i like its golden turkeys and cast iron pans.
i like its smokey fires and mid morning chills.
i like that there's things made from apple
and all sorts of roast veg.
i like that there's things made from apple
and all sorts of roast veg.
i like that there's charcoal knits
and thick woolen tights.
i like that there's heels with closed toes
and socks with slight slouch.
and socks with slight slouch.
i like fall for its worn leather satchels
and its penchant for layers.
i'm still keen on summer though, still happy it's here.
happy for the stripes on my feet
happy for the stripes on my feet
the sun in my hair and the freckles on my nose.
happy there's rosé to drink
and lakes in which to swim.
and lakes in which to swim.
i'll say though, i'm quietly dreaming
of milkshakes with pumpkin
and that season called fall.
how about you,
are your thoughts much the same?
and that season called fall.
how about you,
are your thoughts much the same?
happy august to you friends,
no matter the season
no matter the weather.
love this post nikole...i'm not having a summer like this this year, but i have, and will again.
about autumn...i love it too, but knowing that winter follows makes my heart sink. if fall were followed by another spring and summer yet again....now that would be a different story entirely
I like the sentiment of finding things to enjoy in each season! (And fall is my favorite).
I'm definitely with you! I love summer, but lately, I've been missing cold, crisp air..and all things that come with autum. Don't worry, it'll be here soon enough :)
great photos. totally agree with your thoughts - with it being so hot for so many consecutive days...it makes me anxious for the fall.
I just came across your blog the other day and have been looking at all your pictures and posts in awe. Such wonderful colours and moods! I love it. Thank you for the wonderful inspirations.
I would be honoured to welcome you on my blog one day - www.neu4bauer.blogspot.com. Have a wonderful august day and week.
Yours, Theresa
Oh, I do love fall and welcome it every year. But the weather here (Amsterdam) turned chilly and rainy a few weeks ago and cut my summer short. As I write, the sun is peeking through the window and it's 73f/23c. Better than it has been, but I want to feel humidity, dip my toes in a lake or just wear a skirt (without tights). I leave on holiday to Berlin and south Germany soon to search for some warmth. In case I don't find any, enjoy it where you are!
I so love the way you write. You had me completely mesmerized!
oh yes just like you wrote so well, I miss fall already, too ! And today I was telling myself that august sunlight already 'smells' like fall.
so true. We enjoy what we have, but long for what's ahead...human nature I guess?
Fall is amazing, Spring and Summer too...but if Winter was kept to a maximum of 4 weeks of beautiful white snow that quiets the world and does not continue to ice rain, slush, boots only and covering your face...that would be nice!
A beautiful way to describe your summer and great pictures to go along with it.
I love summer on the water, this year has been consistently cool so it often feels like autumn - the famous San Francisco Marine Layer has been cooling clear up to San Rafael. Now the days are getting shorter, children are getting ready for school and I'm happy to welcome the focus and turning-inward of fall. Then winter, with wood fires! Love it all.
the idea of milkshakes with pumpkin also makes me excited for autumn.
So very, very lovely, Nikole. x
Your words made me smile - I liked imagining all you described, from summer to fall.
Though our summer weather has been as mild as fall weather strangely enough - but that's okay with me (as long as it has nothing to do with global warming that is) because fall is by far my favorite season...
Love your blog -
Mm.
Lovely.
i am ready for summer to take its retreat, it's been rather brutal.
Giving space to dream...as always.
xo,
WHP
I've definitely been enjoying summer and making the most of it. However, no trips to a lake, yet. No matter how much I enjoy summer, I'll always yearn for fall. It's my favorite season; the season I can finally start to wear the knits I've made all summer! First chance I get, I'll be making a pumpkin pie and sipping a chai latte.
I'm almost wordless, as that was so beautifully expressed.
So I'll just say what I'm really thinking...
...My thoughts exactly.
i am so ready for fall its not even funny! enjoy the rest of your summer.
your words are almost streamed live from inside my head! I live in France and I too am enjoying a summer of rosé, lake swims and striped feet with a smattering of yearning for dewy morning cobwebs.
Beautiful post, glad I stumbled on your blog!
this summer story in pictures is so good. loving how you captured the feel and the light of those summer days.
i'm still holding on to summer very much. but i couldn't live in a climate without changing seasons without missing them very badly. so i guess, yes, autumn will be wonderful once it rolls round.
Inspirational pictures & great write ups.
Really lovely blog
hi everyone, your thoughts on the this season and the next, really make smile. thank you for that, xo.
I am still so much enjoying sleeping on the beach and laying in the sun with the western winds and fresh sea to cool me down.. I like the fall but summer is still too good.
usually in august i start to long for fall with his golden and red leaves and pumpkins and sweaters too. but not this year...it stayed winter so long around here and there really wasn´t a summer except three heat wave weeks. so i really hope summer comes back for an other round, please please!
lovely lovely post!
Oh how I love your description of Fall. So beautifully written! And so eloquently said! I do have a love affair with Fall, it's true. However, I am having a love affair with summer right now...and that is mainly because of how bad winter was in my neck of the woods. However, I do catch myself having random, happy thoughts of Fall. In due time though...in due time!
hi hih! i just stumbled upon your sweet sweet blog and it's lovely! i look forward to following your adventures in the future! xo, kate
perfect as usual.....
melissa ...
I love the transition. Summer into Fall. The promise that those hot hazy days will slip into cool nights. Ann we'll begin pulling on light sweaters and wrap ourselves in old quilts. Enjoy these last few long nights.
ADORE the last photo of the laundry on the line. You caught the light perfectly.
happiest august to you. these have me wishing for a week on a lake!
Spring and Autumn - my favourites - the seasons of least extremes, in between clothes and comfort. Perfect!
hi, n! all the white and the reflected light whisper lazy summer at the cottage. i'll stare at these in winter.
i'm almost ready! i like fall for all the reasons you mention, but not quite yet. let's wait just a few days more -
incredible photos, of course
each has a relaxed summer feel to it
hope your week is going well
Beautiful post! So glad to find you through Lisa!
today i was saying the exact same thing.
but this year it will be a bit different with a wee little baby in our family.
can't wait for sweaters, and pumpkins and scarfs and fresh morning air crisp as cucumbers.
thanks for the beautiful reminder...
such lovely and gentle words, just like autumn itself.
on the other side of the world I'm waiting for spring, with all its freshness of color and flavor.
I long to peel off the layers and sip chilled wine in the sun and walk bare foot on the grass.
The weather has changed here and today I drempt of spicey bean soup, fur lined boots and home made rye bread.
Just saw your home on design*sponge and wanted to tell you how much I adore it. Love your choice of colours.
I love your photos and poem. So sweet. xo
Just discovered your blog through Abby Try Again and thought I'd stop by and say hello :)
